DO A BIT, THEN A BIT MORE, AND A BIT MORE AFTER THAT!

One of the most powerful forces in physics is momentum. In physics, momentum can be described as mass x velocity. If you take the mass to be a constant, then the greater the velocity, the greater the momentum. It takes force to increase the velocity to a certain speed, but once the object is in motion, the actual force required to maintain the velocity reduces. Hence, momentum becomes a self fulfilling entity, with just a small amount of force needed to maintain the velocity and the momentum.

We can use this law of physics in every day life. We all know that’s its easy to exercise once we are in a routine, but it takes a lot more force to get the whole process in motion. Rather than trying to get the whole unit upto maximum speed immediately, you are far better off to start slowly, then increase little by little each day over a week or two. If you are trying to run 5km and have never got off the couch, it may take a little work, but it’s possible if you do a bit, then each day do a bit more. You will surprise yourself!

When I was in my prime fitness in university at age 20 playing aunsralian rules football, i used to run upto 10 km as part of training. But I never did much more distance than that. Twenty years later, decided, “let’s see if i can still run 10 km”? And it was surprising how quickly I was able to get to that distance. And after doing 10, I thought, “perhaps I can do 15Km”. And then it happened. And finally, it occurred that a half marathon was in range, 21km, and I completed that 2 years ago. Because the training was gradual and staged, it never felt like a struggle and crossing the finish line in the half marathon was a great thrill. The following year, I did the full marathon, but was underdone in training. I completed the race but not in a time that was worth announcing! But still, I got the job done.

Anything is possible, you just have to make a start, get a little momentum happening, and after that miracles can happen.
