DO YOU HAVE A “PROBLEM” CHILD?

December 15, 2015

One of the reason kids get labelled a “problem” child is because they don’t fit into convenient societal norms. I’m not a child psychiatrist but I have no doubt there are far too many kids who are labelled ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) who are simply “outside the statistical bell curve”. I’m sure many of the most successful individuals in the world would have been considered “dysfunctional children” by modern standards.

Before you try and change your child or medicate the life out of them, try and look at things from a different angle. Try finding parents who are facing the same issues and see what they have done. A conventional private or public school education may not be for your child. That doesn’t make them bad or abnormal. The challenge is finding a way to engage with them and helping them to channel their often high energy outputs into constructive rather than destructive tendencies.

Sporting clubs, outdoor activities, adventure sports, endurance events can all be a great outlet. If you are able to engage them into something that quietens and calms their nerves such as painting, meditation, yoga, acrobatics or surfing, then this can be their lifeline for life. Everyone needs a way to find stillness.

As far as possible try not to label your child. They are doing the best they can. They want and need your love even though they are asserting their identity. There is no doubt that the parenting of these kids is challenging, so make sure you find time for yourself to refresh and renew. None of us are bottomless pits of patience and compassion.
