HAPPY HOUR AT THE RETIREMENT HOME

December 2, 2015

You’ll all know that I enjoy looking after our senior citizens. They have lived a full life and have moved past all the small-fry nonsense that we all get embroiled in. One of my 94 year old patients moved into a retirement village last year.

I asked him how he found living in a retirement village and what it was like over the Xmas period. He said that it was a very happy and social place. The best part was “Happy hour” on a Thursday evening when the beers were only $2! It was never to excess, but it gave residents a chance to meet and talk and share a few stories.

Some people have asked me about my book title “Meditation and Martini” and why I used an alcoholic drink as a metaphor in this life balance paradigm. In the title of the book, Martini represents all that exists on the material plane, and not just the alcoholic drink. I deliberately chose two seeming opposites to show that there is no conflict between material and spiritual.

There are studies that show that some forms of alcohol such as red wine in moderation reduce cardiovascular disease. I suspect that it’s not just what’s in the red wine (resveratrol antioxidant), but it acts as a medium that brings people together to talk, share and destress. As long as consumption is a moderate then alcohol may serve a useful role.

Till then, lets encourage the Happy hour at the nursing home!
