THE FOOTY’S BACK ON!

April 4, 2016

It’s a great time of the year in Australia when the footy season begins again, unless of course you’re a footy hater! Mostly though, football is a religion that runs through most Australian veins and it’s a popular topic of conversation, discussion and debate. Out there in the general community there is a general lift and buzz that happens at the start of the footy season.

My team Carlton hasn’t fared too well in recent years, but they are a young bunch of guys who are finally rebuilding properly from ground up. The expectations aren’t too high, but fans do expect to see their players have a red hot go. Australian Rules football players are incredible athletes. They have to be fast, strong, able to jump and turn, and capable of great endurance. The game is played at breakneck speed these days and injuries are common. With the potential for serious injury at any time, they require huge reserves of courage.

One thing I’ve always loved about football supporters here is how supporters from both teams are seated together. There is no segregation like what happens in european soccer. Supporters yell and scream and support with great gusto, but at the end of the day, everyone goes home as friends. Of course there are exceptions  and the racist poster that we saw recently was immediately reported, taken down, and the troublemakers escorted from the ground.

It’s a great game and hopefully the powers that be maintain the  integrity and professionalism at the highest level.

Good luck to your team!
