PARENT VOLUNTEERS IN KIDS SPORT

March 14, 2016

We had my sons Under 16 cricket grand final this weekend. They had an undefeated season and were favourites to take the flag. But a middle order collapse made it look unlikely. A scintillating 70 odd run knock by Flukes and Anderson carried the score to 192. In the end that turned out to be a good enough score and the opposition were unable to make the chase.

Any Grand Final win at any age and any level is a great effort. Playing in a team and reaching the pinnacle of the year is a wonderful achievement. These kids are all 14 and it’s likely that many of them will remain friends for the many years as they grow further into their teens and then embark on higher education and pursue careers. Certainly some of my fondest memories were playing school cricket and football and junior golf.

But without the tireless efforts of volunteer parents who manage and coach teams, these kids would not have such opportunities. It’s one of the grassroots reasons that Australian sport, across the board, in nearly every mens and women’s discipline, has such strength and depth. Standing on the sidelines watching our kids on a beautiful day yesterday, our manager made the comment, “it doesn’t get much better than this, does it?” And I  had to agree.

Pure bliss exists in the simplest of activities. That’s an example of spirituality in daily life. It’s not just found on the yoga mat!
