RESPECTING THE BODY AT AGE 100!

March 13, 2016

It was a great thrill for me today to meet a 100 year old patient. One hundred years of life! Just amazing. But the fantastic thing was how good his health was. These days we find that most 50 year olds are on at least one medication for either blood pressure or cholesterol or diabetes. This gent was not on a single medication and informed me that he still exercised every day. Inspirational.

100

When it came to an examination he had to get himself into bed. He refused any assistance from me and the nursing staff and just advised me “that once you reach a certain age, you have to do things a bit more slowly”! Just delightful. I reckon if you get to the ripe old age of 100 then you must have done something right. In particular he has learned to accept the reality of the body being less able and just having to slow everything down.

I’m looking forward to seeing him again tomorrow and finding out a bit more about his life. There is a certain wisdom gained from life experience that is available to us if we are prepared to invest the time and listen.
