THE PROBLEM WITH MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKERS

February 10, 2016

I’m not having a crack at motivational speakers because many of them have some incredible stories of human determination to share. Many come from extreme tragedy such as a major accident or health catastrophe. Others are sharings of superhuman feats such as endurance running or solo sailing. They are all truly incredible in their own right and people can gain inspiration from these stories.

But in a way, they are too far removed from the reality that people face every day. Do they really help with a conflict between husband and wife or father and son? Do they help resolve workplace discrimination or bullying? And do they deal with the most fundamental issues of self love, acceptance and self-esteem? Some of them may force you to think about them, but most of them are just so far away from the “on the ground” practical truths that they don’t really help that much.

How many times have you heard an amazing story in the news or on TV and you’ve gone “wow”, but in the very next instant you are grappling with the most mundane problems which are “your” Mt Everest to be climbed and conquered. It’s just as helpful for you to deal with your issues in an honest way and place them under the eye of resolution through open communication and consultation. You may need to enlist a professional counsellor or mediator, or it may just about bouncing ideas off a few good friends.

Yes, use the inspiration of others to strengthen your own inner qualities, but don’t forget to address the things closest and most dearest to you first. They are your greatest supports but equally your biggest challenge.
