TRIUMPH AND TRAGEDY IN US MASTERS GOLF

April 14, 2016

From the time I was 15 years of age, I looked forward to the US masters golf tournament at Augusta National in Georgia. It was always an early rise, Australian time, and the final round would always finish on Monday morning when I was supposed to be at school. Needless to say, I was usually a late arrival on that day of the year!

This year’s tournament was nothing short of extraordinary with windy conditions and supper fast greens.  The three Australian hopefuls: Jason Day, Adam Scott and Marc Leishman could not get amongst the final mix and it all seemed destined for Jordan Speith to win back to back “Green jackets”. But alas, destiny had other plans, when on the back 9 he started with bogey, bogey and then an inconceivable quadruple bogey. Taking nothing away from Englishman, Danny Willett, he produced a stunning final round to launch into the lead and win the tournament.

These golfers are wonderful role models for our kids. Jordan Speith carried himself with grace and dignity in the most difficult moment in his career. Humble in victory and gracious in defeat. He’s a champion and will bounce back.
