USE NATURAL SPACES TO DEVELOP MENTAL CALM

July 17, 2016

Last week I was holidaying in one of my favourite parts of Australia, Port Douglas and Far North Queensland. I love going to Mossman Gorge and bathing in the pure water there. One always feels enlivened and renewed by bathing in those waters. But it’s more than just a feeling of freshness. There is something else that pervades certain places that automatically leads to a state of transcendence, where the world stands still and the mind becomes crystal clear.

It reminds me of the waters that pound their way down from the holy Himalayas that form the river Ganges. It seems no surprise to me that seekers of stillness always gravitated to places like that. When I roamed the Himalayas as a 25 year old seeker I spent time in places like Rishikesh, Haridwar and Joshimath along the banks of the Ganges. And I would watch thousands of other seekers become one with nature and peace with all as they soaked in the purity of those regions.

Every place carries a subtle energy that promotes certain endeavours and qualities and we can use those spaces for those purposes. That is why churches, temples, mosques and synagogues were created, to assist the earnest spiritual seeker on their journey. One of the reasons people enjoy going to the gym to exercise is that it inspires us to train. Likewise a library is conducive to studying. Similarly, we can use great spaces of nature like the Mossman gorge or the Ganges or Uluru to help our small selves expand into something much bigger and worthier of the spirit that lies within us.

Nature gives everything so freely for us to use. It is truly a blessing.
