DO YOU USE THE SKILL OF VISUALISATION?

June 26, 2016

The Olympics is coming up soon and we will have the opportunity of seeing the worlds best athletes competing against themselves and the rest of the world. The difference between winning and losing at that level comes down to 0.1%ers. You will see many of them at the starting line with eyes closed calming their nerves and visualising their ideal race. The mere act of visualising is enough to anchor them to the process and settle any lingering nerves that may compromise their efforts.

There is no reason why this skill can’t be used in our daily lives. It can be used for the most mundane to the most stressful situation. For many people, the thought of presenting in front of others gives rise to great anxiety. Rather than getting caught up in the flood of adrenaline, you can visualise yourself giving a top notch presentation. Visualisation can be creative and emotive and may even include the audience giving you a standing ovation!

Whenever I have a major surgery to perform, I always go through the steps and visualise them the night before the surgery as I lie in bed. It gives me the assurance that there are a series of steps that I have followed time and time again that have been very reliable and produced good results.

Visualisation anchors your physiology to the neurological pathways required to accomplish any task. It is an under-utilised skill that when used, helps activate the “will”. And will is a very powerful force that orchestrates a series of neuroendocrine physiological responses that gives you the best chance of success. If you are going through any life challenge then start using the art of visualisation. Health challenges, relationship difficulties, and preparation for any event may all be assisted with visualisation.
