JUST KEEP ME INFORMED, THAT’S ALL

November 24, 2015

The surgical game has it’s own set of problems. We often say as surgeons, that if a surgeon says they don’t get complications then they are either liars or they don’t do enough surgery! Unfortunately it’s part of the territory. Although precautions are taken every single time,  occasionally we get an infection or a bleed. That’s just how it is.

Whenever that happens under my care, the main thing I do is intensify my communication. Patients want to know that everything is progressing fine despite the problem, and they need the reassurance that we are available should things worsen. By and large, given the right treatment and time, everything settles down eventually.

communication

Recently, we have been completing the construction of our new office space and there have been some unexpected long delays. The biggest frustration is not knowing a timeline or the expected course. No-one seems to know when things will be done and what the likely course of action is. Doctors get plenty of tuition these days on communication but we can always do better. I reckon those in the building trade may need some communication skills training too!

Good communication is the pathway to peaceful processes and constructive resolutions. We can all be mindful of this.
