NORTHCOTE CRICKET CLUB

February 28, 2016

I attended a dinner last night for the 50th anniversary of the Northcote Cricket Club famous 1955/56 premiership. The team was made up of a bunch of weekend “trundlers” who loved the game and simply enjoyed getting out there with their mates. But they were ably led by none other than Bill Lawry, former Australian Test captain.

The story goes that in the epic Grand Final, Bill Lawry scored an incredible 282 to clinch victory. Just as importantly was the support of his teammates who scored the other half chasing more than 500. In a rather memorable ceremony last night, the past players from that team were honoured with life membership and presented a cap from the current First IX players who lined up behind them on the stage. Everyone must have some peak moments in their lives which they look back on with nostalgia, pride and humility. For the 1955/56 players, that was their moment to shine.

It’s these small community groups that are nurturing youngsters and new talent that are showing leadership in our community. They create bonds of friendship that last for a lifetime through good times and bad. They also have an initiative to promote and encourage women and indigenous players in cricket. It’s these grassroots movements that set the scene for future generations irrespective what are politicians and councillors are doing which are often more motivated by political and power needs.

And studies show that being involved in a group is good for your health. It fulfils the human need of being connected to something bigger than them.

So what are you waiting for? Exercise, golf, painting, book club, bridge, it doesn’t matter!Find a group and get involved.
