OJAS- BLISSFUL LIVING

June 28, 2026

Every now and again it’s good to pause, reflect and muse about your life, where you are at and where you are heading. Are the actions you are taking, the company you are keeping, and the time you are spending leading the greater degrees of fulfillment, contentment and happiness. Or are creating discontent, unhappiness and unpleasantness for you and for those around you.

In Ayurveda, the Indian system of medicine there is a term called “ojas”. It refers to the final product that is created as a result of the food we consume due to various stages of digestion. It results in energy, enhanced immunity and a sense of pleasantness. When there is ojas, one can experience a sense of flow and calm. And when ojas is plentiful, the need for chasing external sources of false happiness disappears.

How many times in your life have you experienced the desire to achieve a goal and once accomplished you are left feeling unfulfilled. The great climb up the corporate ladder; the financial ladder; the ladder of recognition; the ladder of accumulation and the end result is one of disappointment. Whilst the achievement of goals can produce satisfaction and happiness at least for a short to medium time, it can never lead to long lasting happiness.

Fulfillment in the present requires generation of Ojas. And with that Ojas one can then pursue goals, ambitions and achievements in a much lighter, playful and non attached way. Consider Ojas to be like a constant cool pleasant breeze on a warm day, but it’s there as a constant companion. The simple action of breathing, moving, seeing, hearing creates a sense of bliss. A lovely way to live and be, for oneself, and for those around you.

There are several simple ways to generate Ojas.

  • BREATH- the simple act of breath awareness, conscious breathing, timed breathing is a simple way of connecting to the life energy that pulses through your body
  • AWARENESS- just paying attention during the day, of simple things that may not normally be in your focus
  • MEDITATION- any method, any technique, any duration helps tap into the above.
  • GRATITUDE- living with an awareness of lifes blessings
  • LIFESTYLE- food, sleep, movement
  • PAUSING- the simple regular act of pausing during the day

The entire Yogic and Ayurvedic sciences are there to generate Ojas.
