THE BIRDMAN RALLY- HAVE A BELLY LAUGH

It’s the Moomba long weekend here in Melbourne. It’s a community event that coincides with the labour day weekend and has been running since the 1950’s. As a child I used to love watching the “Birdman rally”. In this event, people dress up in all kinds of crazy costumes with some kind of wings and jump off a platform. The person who flies the furthest wins the money. Often people do it as a fundraiser for a worthy cause.
It’s quite funny. Most people simply run to the end of the platform and gravity drops them straight into the muddy Yarra river, not known for its cleanliness. But occasionally you get an aeronautical freak who has created something that can actually fly. Watch the video.
According authentic sources (Wikipedia), the name Moomba stems from the Aboriginal root words, “Moom”= bum, and “Ba”= up! Basically it means “up your bum”. The whole theme of Moomba is fun, frivolous and cheeky, just as the name suggests and the Birdman rally tops it off.
I will be tuning into the 2015 bird man rally today and having a big belly laugh!
Be well.
