WHY YOU CAN’T RELY ON EMOTION

May 12, 2016

Have you ever seen a singer in the peak of their performance during a concert? The best ones know how to take themselves and their audience on an emotional journey. When they hit their peak, the moment quivers on the edge of non material reality. It’s about to melt into the empty void. It’s so close to spiritual where the singer, the song and the audience have merged into one harmonious unit. In fact it is spiritual. All boundaries and demarcations are wiped away, in that moment. It’s the heightened pitch of emotion that is the vehicle to reach that space.

It’s pure magic. But the problem is that emotions are always in a state of flux. That is the nature of emotion. No-one, absolutely no-one, not even the Dalai Lama or Deepak Chopra are on a constant emotional high. To be so would lead to a fused system. But they have learned to access a deeper space of quiet and silence from which there is a constant emanation of peace, love and contentment. Unless that happens, there will always be a hankering for something or someone to try take you to that state of bliss.

We’ve all had the experience of a temporary high, only to be shattered by the subsequent low that follows once the fever-pitch has worn off. It maybe acing a test in school, scoring a winning goal, meeting a new partner, or even that first kiss. It’s incredible and exhilarating, but the feeling never lasts, because the substance of that feeling is emotion.

There’s nothing wrong with emotion and experiencing the spectrum of emotions, but remember, you’ll never find “it” in emotion. That sense of “completion” will never be in emotion. The experience “that everything is ok exactly the way that it is”, can never come from emotion. Because if you are chasing “the high” you will only end up on the slippery downward slope. Instead you need to find that place of peace in your own way and through your own means. Whilst formal meditation may work for one person, the other may need to be running marathons. In the realms of spirit, there’s no one size fits all!
