Find a senior citizen, then stop and listen….

August 19, 2014

One of the benefits of working as a Urologist is meeting plenty of senior citizens. When a consulting session permits, I love to take an extra 10 minutes and listen to the life story of an individual who has gained the wisdom of living. Every person has a story to tell, and life seems to have a way of polishing our rough edges (whether we like it or  not!).

Unfortunately we live in a society that does not value our elderly. Look around in the world- the media, the  magazines, the movies, and it’s all about youth and beauty. The process of ageing puts all of this in it’s true perspective, and enables us to focus on the things that really matter.

At a certain time in all our lives, we all realise that our time on earth will ultimately come to an end. That realisation makes us look at life in a different way, with more care and tenderness. If we are able to glean these lessons in our youth, then we have a much higher chance of making sensible choices in life.

This week, find a senior citizen, and just listen. It may change your life.
