Jim Carrey- on dreams, wealth and fame

September 25, 2014

Most of our activities are centred towards making our lives more comfortable. A better house, a nicer car, a fancier meal, a nicer holiday, and the list goes on. There is nothing wrong with wanting to have a more comfortable lifestyle as long as you keep it in perspective. I see people busting their guts, working ridiculous hours, with no quality of life, in order to earn more money, in order to become more comfortable! In the process they have a heart attack or their marriage breaks down. So comforts are fine, but keep the pursuit in check.

Jim Carrey at a recent speech at the Maharishi University in Iowa said,  I wish people could realize all their dreams and wealth and fame, so that they could see that it’s not where they’re gonna find their sense of completion.” A profound statement. If only we knew  this from our childhood, we would start our lives with more balance and perspective about finding happiness and contentment.

At some point along the journey, we all come to the realisation that accomplishment of our dreams, accumulation of wealth, and acquisition of fame does not bring happiness. Maybe for a short period of time, but once the buzz subsides, there will always be a sensation of “surely there is something more”. Then begins an inner search. Instead of realising this at the end of our lives, doesn’t it make sense to quietly pursue the inner and outer simultaneously. Each keeps the other in balance like two wings of a bird.

Now there is no need to give up everything and head to the mountains! Just start with 10 minutes of quiet contemplation and meditation and see what happens!
