IT’S NEVER TOO LATE TO EXERCISE

May 18, 2016

I was at the gym the other day about to do some exercise, “lat pull downs” to be specific. It’s a great compound exercise that works a whole lot of upper limb muscles. Compound exercises are far more useful from a functional perspective. Think squats, burpees, lunges etc. Anyway, I looked across to the next machine and there was a little old lady having personal training who was pulling just as much as me!

I had a chat to her trainer and said, “wow, she’s incredible, what’s her secret?” He said that she’d been working out since she was 60 and that she was now 80 and as strong as ever. The great thing was that she was still working to maintain her physical health. Ideally, if we have exercised our entire lives, then we can continue that well into our senior years. But even if exercise was never part of your life in your earlier years, it is never too late to start using your body. You may need a trainer or a physiotherapist to help you with a routine, but it’s never too late to start. Regular exercise and moderate diet are your best health insurance.

And especially when life throws an unexpected problem at you which requires surgery or rehabilitation, you will recover much faster if you have kept yourself in good nick.

Very topical issue – with ongoing rage from the Chronic Fatigue patient community over the UK’s PACE trial (having been rigged to make them look just lazy?) and nobody sure if stamina training or 5-minute bursts best build resilience. theMindfulGap.com.au/2016/05
