Singing is great for your health

August 16, 2014

Last night I attended a fantastic performance by a Yale University choir called “The Whiffenpoofs”. They performed an Acapella set in the magnificent Scots Church of Melbourne. It was nothing short of brilliant and as they performed it made me ponder how good singing is for your health.

Studies show that singing has many beneficial effects, particularly when in a group. Apart from the connectivity and bond created of a group activity, their are many physiological benefits that are similar to regular exercise, laughter or yoga. A Swedish study showed that heartbeats get synchronised and pulse rates go up and down in unison. Breathing is intimately connected with all physiological functions, and singing leads to a longer, more regular breath pattern.

This weekend, find a way to sing. Apart from having fun, it’s great for your health.
