Surely running a marathon is bad for your health?
Apparently when you turn 40, strange things happen that make men start running half marathons and marathons! Yes, it happened to me. I had never run more than around 12km when I was a fit young footy player back in university twenty years ago, and I never even contemplated doing something as ridiculous as running a half marathon. Well, I embarked on the goal (21km) and completed my first one in October 2013 and my second one in July 2014. Overall, the experience was exhilarating and a wonderful feeling running in a big group and accomplishing a challenging goal.
One thing leads to another and I now see myself preparing for a full marathon. As the date approaches, I have come to the frightening conclusion that a full marathon is all-together a different beast. I don’t in any way believe that it is good for my health. In fact I know my joints and muscles will take a pounding on the day. I do know, however, that the challenge will be just as much a mental hurdle as it is a physical one and that is what spurs me on. Physically, I feel a fraction underdone still, and it does concern me that I may not be able to accomplish the goal. But I will give it my best shot and hopefully cross the line unscathed!
As an unknown author said, “Set a goal so big that you can’t achieve it, until you grow into the person who can”.
