The Robin Williams tragedy- can we learn anything from this?

August 13, 2014

The world has been rocked by this tragedy of epic proportions. A moviestar and comedian who played varied roles in movies such as Good Will Hunting; Dead Poet’s Society; Good Morning Vietnam; and Patch Adams, he was a much-loved individual who brought much laughter and happiness to the lives of all of us.

Despite an external facade of humour and comedy, he battled with depression and alcohol dependency for many years. Unfortunately this is another story of a Hollywood icon who was unable to find peace and happiness, who  ultimately found himself in a situation that  was too big a challenge to continue. We can only weep for the deep pain and anguish that he must have been feeling.

His premature death does however illustrate a fact that we all know- happiness can not be found in money, fame or power. In fact many people in positions of fame, wealth and power struggle with this fundamental quality that is our inherent birthright.

These individuals are our heroes and role models in society. In a way it is unfair that they carry a  greater  responsibility than the common man. The reality is that no matter how things look on the surface, our heroes battle with the same demons as everyone else.

For the common man, it is important to accept the human plight with honesty and bravery. Depression is a serious disorder that sometimes requires outside help from psychiatrists and psychologists. At the same time all necessary action can be taken with good lifestyle through adequate sleep, proper diet, regular exercise, meditation and other stress reducing methods. Depression can not simply be pushed down out of sight. It must be addressed and treated in such a way that it finds a place to exist harmoniously within the individual.

Only by accepting the presence of darkness can we appreciate the quality of light.
